Is it required to have a science degree for your role? And do you need strong writing skills too?

Hope L.
Communication Scientist
Hi! Yes a science degree was required for my role, as I often have to understand and translate quite complex science into accessible and engaging communications. I personally studied biology (which enabled me to understand and analyse a range of scientific topics), and then I did a Masters in Science Communication (which taught me to translate science into simple, engaging language for a range of audiences). Both of my degrees really set me up well for this role!
In terms of strong writing skills, I would suggest that this would definitely help. I have always enjoyed writing, and studied English to A-level, which I think definitely helps me in the role. However, I also develop communications using other forms of media.
