I was lucky enough to know a few different people who had worked for Mars in the past before joining, so they gave me a good insight into what Mars was like.
However, I think I have been surprised at just how focussed on people development we are. It is something that is a true focus point, not just the odd thought now and again. I think this is fantastic because it really pushes you to improve in a variety of areas both functionally and personally.
As well, I knew Mars' 5 Principles were important, however I didn't realise just how often they would be referred to. All the decisions we make as a business are built around and informed by these 5 Principles. This leads to a great alignment and consistency in the decisions we make everyday.
I have been amazed at what it takes to actually develop a pet treat! Years of scientific research and development go into each one of our treats, and the journey doesn't end when it's launched. We are continuously trying to improve our processes and recipes too! I think this is fantastic and makes me very proud of the products we make.
